An addendum to Crime of the Century in Real Time

When Donald J Trump said that “We caught them all” there is always the tendency to think this is just hyperbole or Trump’s habit of bravado. It is understandable. The liberal use of kayfabe and other forms of misdirection or MILDEC (military deception) makes it hard to differentiate truth from misinformation. However, in this case I believe my theory of how Trump caught them all is starting to gain more evidence.

If you recall in my previous article Crime of the Century in Real Time, I posited the idea that the 175 million IP’s that were released on Jan 20th, 2021, may have already been used rather than being released for future use. I came across some more information that I believe supports this theory even further. Before I get into the specifics of what I found let’s recap my theory and how it fits into Trump’s plan.

                In order to present an effective case for catching them all, Trump and his team needs to present something more than just PCAP’s (packet captures) or some spreadsheets in a Power Point presentation. Any of this “proof” can be manufactured or generated. What is needed is for the “Crime of the Century” to be displayed in real time. A visual display or an emulation that shows the steal in real time; a way to display the votes being changed or manipulated in real time (the date of the steal).

                It is my contention that Trump and his team used the 175 million IP addresses to create a so called “man-in-the-middle” instance that collects the data being sent to a foreign entity for manipulation, displays it in real time, and sends it back to desired destination without being detected. To do this, Trump would need access to data capture devices which he did. Below is a diagram of what this might look like:

I believe Trump has always understood his role as both President and Commander in Chief. The office of the President is something Trump always believed was an office he held at the behest of the people, an honored guest in the White House. With the presidency also came the duty of Commander in Chief. Not wanting to be derelict in his duty to protect our elections from obvious theft this man-in-the -middle network must be hidden and protected.

Like a respectful guest who understands the privilege of his temporary stay in the White House, Trumps cleans up after himself!

                It was never entirely clear why Trump would release those 175 million IP addresses after using them. Rather than surmise that those IPs were released for future use, my theory suggests they were already used. To be fair, I never had a great answer why the were released on Jan 20th and taken back later in September.

The Defense Department says it still owns the addresses but that it is using a third-party company in a "pilot" project to conduct security research.

                What I have discovered is that there is technique that is used (especially with in the DoD) to advertise previously hidden IP’s. By doing this you can accomplish two goals:

1.       Draw out any nefarious players who locked onto your IP’s or spoofed them

2.       Sanitize these IP’s for future use by ensuring the IP’s are clean of background noise or illegal use.

                Basically, what happens is this: the Department of Defense has these IP’s that are NOT to be advertised to the internet world. So, no one is supposed to “learn” them or be able to use them. Nerds like me know that they are out there, but they should never show up in our routing tables as an actual route. When a route is advertised it is “learned” by other devices that are listening. There is a very real chance that whatever instance was created by Trump could have been learned without advertising and THIS is what Trump was trying to do with The Cleansing.

Doug Madory who is the director of Internet analysis at Ketnik goes on to explain:

I interpret [the DoD statement] to mean that the objectives of this effort are twofold. First, to announce this address space to scare off any would-be squatters. … Second, to collect a massive amount of background internet traffic for threat intelligence: … There is a lot of background noise that can be scooped up when announcing large ranges of IPv4 address space.

…

We can certainly hope that the DoD uses the threat intel gleaned from the large amounts of background traffic for the benefit of everyone. Maybe they could?…?present about the troves of erroneous traffic being sent their way. -Doug Madory

                Can you see what is being done here? There is a very real possibility that what we observed on Jan 20th with the release of these IP addresses was the cleansing of IP space AFTER Trump used them to “catch them all.” A cleansing that also includes the hunting down of nefarious characters who may have been aware of a “man-in-the-middle” instance during the elections.

                In future articles, we can dive deeper into what this “man-in-the-middle” instance really looks like and perhaps what technologies were used. For now, I believe we have answered a big question as to why these IP’s were broadcast and then taken back. Like any good house guest, Trump cleans up after himself. He used the IP’s to catch them all and then cleansed those IP’s like any good house guest might neatly make their bed before leaving. Typically, guests like this are often welcomed back.
